That's true I suppose. We 'pushed on' a bit on the first day as we were anxious to get to Switzerland nice and early to secure some camping and were certainly not slow on any day but we saw some driving that worried us a bit. Blind corner overtaking is dodgy regardless of country!
Anything that encouraged a racing mentality would certainly be a bad idea.

Hi all - we got back yesterday after visiting the Tyrol, Heidelberg, Lichtenstein , Luxembourg and Bruges... Bruges is sooo much nicer than Venice! We had a wonderful rally and I totally agree with Ryan from the Living Gobshites (we camped together during the trip...) that it is lovely to have the option to either go to the checkpoints or just get to a campsite, set up and relax without stressing out about town centres and deadlines...
I think if you stay in hotels closer to the meeting points, this is less of an issue, but with a campsite out of the centre of town find, a tent to put up and food to locate etc it all gets a bit hurried...
On day two sat on the beach at our campsite at lake maggiore, it was the loveliest, most relaxing thing we could have done... and I, for one, am glad there was no pressure for us to show our faces in the evening... I also don't feel like I missed out on the experience..
We were very lucky with borders - the only people wanting to check passports were the port authorities and reception people at campsites...! Go figure! No problems with police, one camera flash but not sure whether it was us it flashed at.....car did 55 mpg all the way so a very successful trip ... thanks to the organisers for being so understanding and letting us checkpoint skivers do our thing...!
I loved the day 2 route but agree that day 1 was too long.. maybe start the rally in Reims or something..... let us get a little way in on the Thursday?? It would redude the burden of that long drive somewhat?? I did think the Italian Job routes were more interesting on a daily basis... the trip to Thun was just long and then the last couple of hours to Venice was not exactly pretty .... Lightening over venice was impressive though I must say..
Thanks to all, hope everyone got back in one piece... _________________ The Wurzel's Not Enough |

Rachel,
many thanks for your comments....pleased you had a good time....your suggestion about starting day 1 in Reims etc. to give us a head start is certainly something worth considering where a long first day is likely. Planning another recce trip in October and will be on the look out for a suitable start point.
best wishes to all at Drax Industries..... |

I have an employee who hails from Reims and who owes me a favour.
I could 'pump' him for information? _________________ We are 'The Living Gobshites' |

maps and directions were included in the rally pack for the first night check-in, day 1 start, day 1 check-in, day 2 start, road to Schilthorn, day 2 check-in. Separate (double sided) A4 sheet issued for day 3 check-in. Not sure what else I can do......but glad you found us anyway...cheers admin)
I think the only problem really was the maps were quite small and hence quite difficult to read. Maybe a full page printout from google maps? I wouldn't worry too much though - I think our map reading skills were at least partly to blame! We throughly enjoyed it and I'm already browsing crumball cars for next year. The big merc was great on the motorways(I still use it) but I'm looking for something that copes with the corners and slopes a bit better!
